How to become a conversion optimizer

The realistic path: tasks, skills, salary and how to get in without a degree. As of 2026.

What a conversion optimizer does all day

The job sits between marketing, data and product. On a typical day you evaluate a running experiment, write two new hypotheses for the checkout, discuss with the shop team why the last variant lost, and prioritize the backlog by expected revenue impact.

It is not a pure campaign job. You work on the same website permanently, know its numbers better than anyone else in the company, and you are the first person asked when the question is "Why are people not buying?"

The skills that actually matter

Four of them carry 80% of the job:

  • Reading web analytics: GA4 or a comparable setup, plus a behavior tool like Microsoft Clarity. You need to see where visitors get stuck.
  • Basic statistics: significance, samples, runtimes. You need to know when a result is a result.
  • Psychology and user guidance: Why do people click here and not there? A/B tests live on good assumptions about behavior.
  • Reading HTML and CSS: you do not have to code yourself, but you must be able to assess a test idea.

A formal degree is not required for this. Self-study with real projects often carries more weight in interviews, because it shows directly what you can do.

The realistic entry path

There are four typical paths, and none of them needs five years of lead time. From shop management or marketing: you know the shop, add the methodology and take over testing topics internally. This is the most common path. From web design or UX: you bring the user perspective and add data thinking. Career change through self-study: courses, your own test project on a demo shop or pro bono, documented in a public case study. After vocational training or a degree: marketing, business or computer science as a base, then specialization through practice.

Honest timelines: with 5 to 10 hours per week you reach fundamentals level in three to six months. The free certification gives you the thread for that, and the certificate with verify ID gives you proof for interviews.

What does a conversion optimizer earn?

The job portals, as of 2026, land in a similar range: StepStone lists CRO managers at an average of EUR 63,100 per year (range EUR 54,100 to 73,900), and conversion optimization managers at EUR 48,900. GEHALT.de puts a conversion strategist at around EUR 54,100.

Three things shift the number: region (Munich and Hamburg pay above average), company size and your proof. If you can present a documented test result next to the certificate in an interview, you negotiate on a different level than someone who only names the job title.

Certificate yes or no?

As an entry point or structure aid: yes. As a substitute for projects: no. The honest analysis shows the cases where it pays off and those where your time is better invested elsewhere.
